Title transfer + insurance setup for Jake's Delivery Service
0 of 11 steps done
1
Get the Paperwork Ready
Do this at home before DMV visit
Find the pink slip (Certificate of Title)
Your dad has it โ it's the original title document for the Ranger. Check the glovebox, filing cabinet, or safe. If lost, he needs to request a duplicate from DMV first ($23).
Download + print REG 256 (Statement of Facts)
This is the gift transfer form. Check Section G โ "Transfer Subject to Use Tax Exemption." Check the box that says the vehicle is a gift between family members.
He signs as the "seller/transferor." You sign as the "buyer/transferee." The purchase price line โ write GIFT or $0. Do this together before your DMV visit.
Dad files Notice of Transfer (NRL) online
California law: seller must notify DMV within 5 days of transfer. He does this online โ takes 2 minutes. It releases him from future liability on the truck.
โ Signed pink slip (both signatures) โ Completed REG 256 (gift transfer checked) โ Your CA driver's license โ Cash or card (~$25 transfer fee) โ Current smog certificate (if over 4 years old)
Walk out with new title in your name
They process it same day. You get a paper receipt and the official title comes by mail in ~2-3 weeks. Registration sticker updates too.
3
Get Your Own Insurance
Do this same week as title transfer
Call your dad's insurer first
Ask: "Can you add a business use endorsement for occasional paid deliveries?" Some say yes for $20-50/month extra. Cheapest option. If they say no, move to next step.
Get a Progressive Commercial quote
Best option for a one-truck delivery business. Clean record = ~$150-200/month. Takes 10 min online. Select "business auto" โ light truck โ delivery use.
Once you pay, they email you the card immediately. Keep it on your phone. This is what Kristen's clients (and buildings) will ask for if they want a COI.

You're Officially a Business
Optional but smart โ do after insurance is sorted
File DBA "Jake's Delivery Service" with Orange County
~$26 online. Takes 5 min. This lets you invoice clients as "Jake's Delivery Service" and open a business bank account. Not legally required to start, but makes you look legit to Kristen.
